A Technological Triumph
The UTOPIA MAIN range inherits over forty years of Focal know-how and twenty years of innovation in the development of studio monitors. Each component has been meticulously thought out to design exceptional main monitors, delivering a very high level of accuracy, even at high SPL.
Absolute Precision
The ‘M’-shape concept was introduced to both the all-new 5” midrange with a ‘W’-membrane, and the 1.5” Beryllium tweeter, for increased rigidity. The ‘M’ shape moving in and out in a perfect pistonic movement provides a strong planar waveform and gives a true “phantom” center. Those drivers deliver exceptional transient reproduction without causing hearing fatigue.
A Monumental Project
The UTOPIA MAIN studio monitors are the result of the cutting-edge work of our passionate engineers, but also of the renowned sound professionals who tested them. This feedback from the field has helped to refine the performance of this exceptional range.
Significant Bass Extension
The 13” long-excursion subwoofer offers excellent definition and significant extension in the sub-bass, an essential element for main monitors. Multiple simulations have been carried out to deliver ever more accurate bass, while attenuating port noise. The cabinet is made from MDF panels reinforced by a bracing network specially designed to eliminate any cabinet warping. The sound is deep, powerful, and sensational.
Unique External Amplification
The patented amplifiers of the UTOPIA MAIN 112 and UTOPIA MAIN 212 use a combination of a Class H design with a current-mode amplification. Developed by Focal, theses electronics offer the most natural and transparent amplification possible for loudspeakers. Combined with analogue filtering, it achieves the lowest level of harmonic distortion (THD) ever measured in an anechoic chamber.
“W” membrane
Perfectly defined midrange and bass
By developing and manufacturing its own membranes, Focal pushes the limits of innovation in acoustics. The sandwich “W” membrane of the loudspeakers plays an essential role in sound reproduction. It consists of two sheets of glass placed on either side of a central foam body; a sandwich construction that enables us to master the three key parameters of a good loudspeaker: lightness, rigidity and damping. This flagship membrane of Focal know-how perfectly optimizes the frequency response curve, providing low distortion and total listening transparency. Sound is the ultimate in precision.
TMD suspension
Stabilized surround, eliminates vibrations
While our engineers are experts in the development of exclusive diaphragms, they also innovate in all the components that make up the loudspeakers, such as the surround that connects the diaphragm to the frame, the performance of which must be mastered. Introduced in 2015, Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) technology with harmonic damping consists of the addition of finely positioned toroidal weights to stabilize the surround for even greater sonic neutrality. This technology enhances the midrange and the erratic behavior of the surround between 1 kHz and 2 kHz.
Infinite Acoustic Loading
Pure, distortion-free highs
This innovative technology enhances tweeter performance by controlling the acoustic pressure behind the dome and minimising internal resonances through infinite acoustic loading, ensuring pure and distortion-free sound reproduction.
KEY POINTS
- All-new ‘M’-shaped ‘W’ membrane midrange driver: extreme rigidity due to its shape and material, with a powerful magnet, to ensure a precise midrange with no resonance and very-low distortion.
- 1.5″ ‘M’-shaped Beryllium tweeter: including the Tuned Mass Damper® and Infinite Acoustic Loading® technologies, to improve stiffness and rigidity, for excellent transient response with minimum distortion – causing less listening fatigue.
- Current Mode Amplification: the most natural way to amplify a loudspeaker, achieving the lowest THD levels ever measured. Controlling the current instead of voltage is directly controlling the force on the driver and, therefore, it’s response and getting rid of any additional unwanted artifacts.
- Available port plug accessory: for either precision (“sealed”) or more energetic bass (“ported”).
- On-site fine-tuning using the amplifier’s feature board: 2 PEQs, volume trims for each driver, low-shelf, high-shelf, soffit compensation filter, port compensation filter (“sealed” or “ported”), front LED deactivation, standby mode deactivation, etc.
- Massive cabinet using 30mm-thick MDF panels, reinforced with a bracing network cleverly designed to remove any warping including quarter-wavelength resonance reduction systems: maintaining precision even at the highest SPL.
